Every nation has deep-rooted traditions and old-fashioned attire. The traditional clothing of each nation is beautiful in its own way, each with its original style, pigments, patterns, and representing the customs of the country as a whole. The traditional attire of Korea, or Hanbok, is known for its soft, highlighting look that enhances the figure of a woman while imparting a strong, dramatic look on a man.
Have you ever thought of wearing a Hanbok throughout your typical day for no reason at all? If you choose to do this, you’ll probably receive some curious looks from people. These types of costumes are usually worn at weddings, performances, and other types of big events. If Hanbok is so attractive and desirable, shouldn’t it be available for our daily use? Why do we only save it for special occasions?
An experiment was conducted in which a traditional Hanbok was worn daily for one-hundred days. As a result, it was concluded that, although beautiful, a traditional Hanbok causes much discomfort and it is in no way a practical necessity. It was then thought best to design a more contemporary, comfortable Hanbok. A combination of creativity, drive, and historical alteration have brought us a modern-day Hanbok. We now have access to beautiful garments which greatly mimic a western flair while maintaining its original brilliance.
Contemporary Hanbok was then founded with the objective of allowing the young generation to better identify with its cultural style. Jeogori blouses, skirts, dresses, and other types of costumes are stylish, contemporary, and comfortable articles of clothing, all while giving the impression of being ‘elite.” When wearing contemporary Hanbok, you will be able to carry a part of history with you. Remember, traditional Korean clothing has always been the source of inspiration to modern clothing.
Today, contemporary Hanbok has surpassed the borders of Korea. Beyond these borders, Contemporary Hanbok is now desired by people throughout the world, especially in many Asian countries, South America, and Europe. This new line of clothing has been so strategically created that most aren’t aware that it was inspired by traditional Korean clothing. It’s quite difficult to ignore the grace, charm, and tranquilizing pigments of Hanbok of either type.
Not only has Hanbok surpassed its the borders to display Korean fashion trends to the world, the clothing style is portraying the culture, as well. Within the past several years, this style has accrued appreciation from the fashion world, as well. When wearing Hanbok, it is comforting to know that each article of clothing you are dressed in is attractive and it holds much historical creativity.
This style can be seen as a peaceful fashion statement and is quite aesthetically pleasing to the eye. With increasing popularity, Hanbok will surely exceed any expectations of remaining within its original borders. Who knows? Maybe someday (hopefully sometime within the foreseeable future,) Hanbok will become ‘the norm’ and more minds will be opened to its elegance and unique style.
